As we have already seen, Fireworks allows you to work in both vector and bitmap modes. Most applications only allow you to work in one or the other.
Vector Mode
When you first open Fireworks to create a new image, you are in vector mode. Everything you draw is a vector graphic, meaning you can edit and change the lines, curves and shapes.

When you create a shape, you see editable points. You can edit the
individual points by using the sub-selection tool.
When you click on a point, you will be asked if you want to ungroup the rectangle. Click OK. |

Once you have done this you can push or pull the editable points in any direction. |

Now choose the freeform tool. |

Using the freeform tool you can modify your shape, adding more editable points. |
Bitmap Mode
When you open a non-Fireworks image, such as a photo, it will open in Bitmap mode. You can cut, crop and resize it, but you cannot change the shape of the image like you can in vector mode. (the sub selection tool will will only resize the image)
Fireworks will open most common image formats. You can even edit animated gifs, with each individual image being listed in a separate frame.
