In this section we will look at resizing, rotating, cropping and distorting.
Resizing
![]() |
From the menus choose: Modify > Canvas > Image Size Select the Constrain Proportions check box so that you do not distort the image. As you change the horizontal dimension, the vertical dimension will change automatically. |
You can also resize to a percentage of the original size, by choosing:
Modify > Transform >Numeric Transform
Changing Canvas Size
When you resize an image, the canvas size remains the same. You might have too much canvas around your image, or your canvas might be too small and the edges of your image are cut off (if you were enlarging).
- To fix a canvas that is too large, choose:
Modify > Canvas > Trim Canvas
- To fix a canvas that is too small, choose:
Modify > Canvas > Fit Canvas
- To set the canvas at a size of your choice, choose:
Modify > Canvas > Canvas Size
Cropping an Image
To crop part of an image:
- Choose the crop tool from the tools palette:

- Drag a rectangle around the area you want to keep.
- Double click inside the area to perform the cropping.
If you want to crop a different shaped area, select the area you want to keep (using the Marquee, lasso, or magic wand tools)
- Choose Edit > Copy
- Now open a new file. (Choose a transparent background)
- Choose Edit > Paste.
(When you have a selection on the clipboard, Fireworks will automatically choose a suitable canvas size.)
