Brainstorm all the ideas, terms or facts that you know about the topic.  Add all of them to your map no matter how important or irrelevant they may seem at the time. 

Using CMap, double click in the work area and type your thoughts, ideas and existing knowledge. Don't worry about connecting them or formatting them in any way at this stage.
