In these photos I am 'augmenting' (adding to) reality.  I am real (at least I think I am!), but the box and plant pot are 'virtual'.  I am able to rotate and interact in other ways with the virtual items and see the augmented reality on the screen.

BuildAR uses markers in the real world to indicate where the virtual items should go.  Using the program, you 'map' the markers onto the 3D objects that you are using.

Creating your own markers

The markers for BuildAR are 8cm square, with a 2cm black edging.  What is in the centre is up to you.  When you make markers you should also leave some of the white paper border around the outside.

To add in your own markers, first go to a program such as Paint and paint a simple symbol or text.  Save it as a bitmap (bmp). For this example I painted a black circle.

Go to Tools > Generate Patterns. In the pattern generator, open your image file.  The black border will be automatically generated.  Save it as a .patt file for BuildAR to use.

You will need to print your marker.  Remember when you cut it out, leave some white space around the outside of the thick black border.

In the Scene Tree, by default the box.ive file is attached to your marker.  Double click it, and select the .obj file you created earlier.
